Alone in the Dark 1 Remake (canceled)
Gameplay
Alone in the Dark is a cancelled survivor horror video-game project by Eden Games that was planned to be a complete remake of the original Alone in the Dark and a prequel to the 2008 reboot, with a younger Edward Carnby and the return of Emily Hartwood.
The remake project was eventually revived by Pieces Interactive into a complete re-imagination of the original game with an entirely new story after the series' IP was acquired by THQ Nordic.
Development and cancellation[]
The game was supposed to be an updated remake of the first Alone in the Dark. The little existing material (developed only for Atari's internal promotion, therefore still primitive) recycles many of the 3D models from the 2008 title and suggests that the setting and atmosphere would have been faithful to the original title, however introducing some differences: the developers stated that they intended to change some puzzles and to focus more on the effects and management of light. The remake would have inherited the game models of Alone in the Dark: Inferno, appropriately modified, but the gameplay would have remained faithful to the original production, with the only addition of some quick-time events, also including the adventure in the shoes of Emily Hartwood.
Parent company Atari suffered a number of market failures towards the end of Eden Studios' business run, and was forced to lay off a large portion of the staff in 2011 following the release of the team's final game. The company was kept alive all the way until 2013, when it was finally liquidated, resulting in the immediate cancellation of the game.
Gameplay[]
The game would have had the same theme as the first title, with a much more creepy atmosphere and setting, realistic graphics, new puzzles, weapons, enemies and mechanics, taking place in a completely recreated version of Derceto Manor from the original game with improved graphics and atmosphere, while maintaining the fixed camera system and puzzle solving.
The game would have been an upgraded remake of the first Alone in the Dark. The little existing material (developed only for Atari's internal promotion) suggests that there were some differences from the original title, developers said that in their intentions there was the idea of changing some puzzles and concentrating especially on light effects and management.
