Dr. Isaac Herbert was an army doctor in charge of the emergency hospital set in Derceto during the Great War. He appears as a minor character in Alone in the Dark (2024) through the Closing the Refuge clue.
Biography[]
After the New Orleans city council decided to open an emergency hospital in Derceto Manor, Dr. Herbert was put to care for the sick, amongst them being John Marcus, who were suffering from the Spanish Flu.
While the influenza itself was successfully treated most of the time, many died from fungal infections and outbursts of a violent madness caused by a peculiar rot discovered by Jean-Batiste Tabouis. Building engineers were called to make a survey for any potential rot that could spread the infection and seal off the Refuge properly to create a cordon sanitaire. The bodies struck by the fungus were exacerbating the spread of the infection and couldn't be cremated, so Dr. Herbert decided to entomb the bodies permanently in the sealed section of the Infirmary.
As the epidemic of influenza started to decline, Dr. Herbert shut down the Refuge and began the arrangements to transfer the patients to New Orleans by the end of the summer.
