Henry Giger, a.k.a. The Priest, is a playable character in Alone in the Dark: Illumination, and is sworn to battle against the darkness, no matter what the cost.

Background[]

Due to his unflinching faith in God, Father Giger was recruited at an early age into one of the secret societies of the Holy See. It wasn't blind faith that led him to report directly to the Pope, it was his rare ability to simultaneously believe and yet question those beliefs, to actively seek the truth no matter where it took him, mentally of physically.

Thanks to his unwavering faith in God, Henry Giger was enrolled from an early age in one of the secret societies of the Holy See. He works directly for the Pope, believing however that he is on a mission on behalf of God himself. The company's mission is to defend people from the dark forces that lurk at the edge of the world and from secrets that cannot be divulged. He often finds himself fighting monstrous beings but his faith remains firm and his convictions make him one of the men most valued by the papacy. Six months before leaving for Lorwich he confesses for the last time, after which he is sent to Lorwich with very little information about his mission, but only knowing that something is happening there that requires his intervention.

Alone in the Dark: Illumination[]

It was now, in Lorwich, Virginia, that Giger would again test the bounds of his faith. During his years serving the Vatican, Giger had experienced unmentionable circumstances and has been pushed to the limits of mind, spirit and body. There was, however, a common thread throughout these situations. The thread stopped in Lorwich.

The Vatican left him with little instruction. The only direct order, at this point, was to head to the elevator shaft in the mines of Lorwich, and await instructions. Not from the Papal Office, but from God, himself. He was given three Seals that would open, individually, "when the time was right".

Personality[]

Despite the fact that he loved peace, he was cathartic for violence.

He had the rare ability to simultaneously believe yet question his belief in his faith.

By the time of the Final Factory Level, it was said that his resolve was battered and wounded, after his experiences, but he still continued.

Trivia[]

  • Henry Giger's full name is a homage to the artist Hans Ruedi Giger (H.R. Giger) who was the creature design in the horror classic Alien that inspired the Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare art direction.
  • The powers of Giger, apparently of divine nature, represent an incongruity with the universe traced by Lovecraft where there is no trace of the God of Christianity, but deities that are monstrous beings that, at best, are indifferent to humanity.
  • Despite the fact that the three Seals that Henry Giger took with him and would open gradually, they were not mentioned again and is unknown if any of them opened or not during his time in Lorwich.
  • Giger's appearance has striking similarities with Papa Midnite, from the Hellblazer comics, and his main weapons, Heaven and Hell, could be a possible reference to Midnite's neutral affiliation to both Heaven and Hell.
