The Lighter is a common item featured in the Alone in the Dark series. It appears in the first Alone in the Dark, both versions of The New Nightmare and Alone in the Dark (2008).
Alone in the Dark (1992)[]
The lighter is located on the table in the Smoking Room, which is on the 1st Floor of Derceto Manor. The Lighter acts as a water proof counterpart of the matches, as it will still function if the player goes into the water near the end of the game, making it an essential item to finish the story.
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare[]
Original Version[]
Edward Carnby will be able to recover Archibald Morton's lighter, adorned with the image of a storm, in the attic of the villa. Thanks to it it is possible to light a small candle, always in the attic, from which to sense the presence of a wall to be broken through with the crowbar.
GBC Version[]
In the GameBoy Color version of the game the lighter is already present in Edward's inventory and is used to access dynamite in the kingdom of darkness in order to knock down an Indian totem.
Alone in the Dark (2008)[]
The lighter must be recovered from the hotel car park at the start of the game to help Edward and Sarah leave the car park. It is the second selectable object in Edward's right hand. With it it is possible to set fire to petrol trails, light Molotov Cocktails and use it in different combinations of objects. It will always be kept in your inventory without the possibility of discarding it. It can also be used as an alternative light source in case the player runs out of batteries for the flashlight or wishes to save them for another time.
Trivia[]
- The Lighter in the first Alone in the Dark seems to be primarily based on the wind-proof Zippo lighter. However, it was invented by George G. Blaisdell in 1933, while the game is set in 1924, making it an anachronistic item.
- The lighter from the PS2/Wii version of Alone in the Dark (2008) has a missing cap.
