The Piece of straw was asingle strand of straw that ican be picked up by carnby, along with the Key to the gaol upon the defeat of Hutchinson. When shrinking again, Carnby can equip himself with the straw, and essentialy use it as a pole vault to jump the small ravine in the mouse hole. The straw falls down into the ravine where it makes a thud.
