Sarah Flores is the deuteragonist of Alone in the Dark (2008).

She is voiced by Alexandra Williamson.

History[]

Background[]

Sarah is an art trader (city planner in the PS2/Wii version) whom the amnesiac Edward Carnby meets earlier in the game and accompanies him throughout his journey, to find that her role is more important than they both think.

Early life[]

Born into a well-to-do family in 1968, Sarah's father was a tough businessman who made sure she was equipped with the essential keys to success, but he was an unaffectionate man and lacked the ability to show his love for both his daughter and wife.

Sarah came to New York in 1998 to start working as an art trader. Over the years she became increasingly successful in her career but her sense of loneliness continued to grow.

Events of Alone in the Dark[]

Sarah meets Edward for the first time in an not working elevator. She is firstly reassured, but then gets hysterical when she realizes he is not a cop and he is actually amnesiac. She starts to scream, attracting the Humanz, which destroys the elevator. The two however survive, and manage to escape with a car, escorting the wounded Theophile Paddlington with them.

The trio manage to reach Central Park, but Theophile, too weak to keep going, tells Edward to "meet him at the Museum in Room 943", and shoots himself in the head. Sarah starts to panic, but notices Edwards is badly injured. The two temporarily split, but they meet again in an ambulance with Dr. William Hartford, and discover some information about Edward's past.

After this, they try to reach the museum, and Sarah is the first to suspect of Lucifer's involvement in what's happening. However, she is kidnapped by several Vampirezs, and Edward can't do anything to prevent this. Still, he manages to find and save her, before a blood of flesh sucks the life out of her. The two ultimately reach room 943 and, following the istructio of Theophile's ghost, she knocks Edward unconscious, so the two men can talk each other in another dimension. They also discover, and unlock, a secret door to a secret room, conducting to the last test. After having read the prophecy, she remainsat the museum to fullfill her role as Venus, creating a lock for an ambiguous key, while Carnby leaves to look for the Key.

When Edwards rescues the Key, Hermes, Sarah warns the detective, by mobile phone, there is no much time left. She is then taken hostage by Crowley to blackmail Edward, but the latter is able to kill him, freeing Sarah in the process. When Carnby is being possessed by Lucifer, Sarah tries to help him, but she is attacked by the fallen angel in Carnby's place, and the detective has to make a choice:

  • If Edward chooses to shoot Sarah, she falls to her death, while Lucifer manages to possess Carnby.
  • If Edward refuses to shoot Sarah, she hugs him, asking if he loves her. When Edward responds affirmative, it's revealed Sarah is actually possesed by Lucifer, who mocks the detective, so Edwards leaves in disgust, leaving their fate ambiguous.

Personality and Traits[]

As she grew up, Sarah quickly developed a strong, yet sensitive personality. She focused her energy on her studies, and eventually a career as an artist. The art world opened up new doors for her as she discovered the beauty of painting and sculptures. She was finally able to express the feelings she’d been hiding for so long, with her artistic expression.

Sarah is very emotive, and can get scared and scream in fear several time, but she is also able to face Central Park's horrors and to adapt to the situation. She has a strange relationship with Edward, as she is firstly aggress and suspicious toward the detective, but she gradually grows affectionate towards him as their mission progress.

Trivia[]

  • Sarah's phone number is 111. What it means is unclear, but the New Zealand emergency phone call is consistent with Sarah's use of the phone to provide Edward with multiple “Rescues”.
  • Sarah's Japanese voice actor is Atsuko Tanaka, known for characters like Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell, Bayonetta and Reina in Yakuza Kiwami.
