The short is was an object that was present in both Alone in the Dark 2 and Alone in the Dark 3.

Alone in the Dark 2

It can be found on the body of a defeated pirate (the third pirate) in bottom hall of the Flying Dutchman, along with the Pirate pistol.

The fuse can then be combined with the cannon in the Cannon Room, in order to use the cannon in destroying the Crew Dormitory of sleeping pirates to get a Pouch of Gold Coins, which is necessary to continue the game.
