The Double is a minor antagonist in Alone in the Dark 3.
History[]
The Double is a doppelgänger of Edward Carnby that appears after he is murdered by the Elwood Brothers.
When Carnby is tricked and ambushed by the Elwood Brothers, he ends up killed. At some point after this event, the Double came to be as an undead variant of Edward Carnby. The Double meets the detective after he is resurrected by the Indian Amulet.
He is encountered guarding the water tank, right after Carnby gets up from the grave after being revived. He mimics and mirrors Carnby's every move, to stop him from going ahead. Realizing he couldn't harm him without harming himself, Edward gives him his hand, making the doppelgänger fuse to him, taking some of the his clothing with him.
Appearance[]
The doppelgänger is anatomically identical to Carnby, bearing his facial features, hair and posture. He possesses a greenish skin, wearing the assets of a gunslinger: a black cowboy hat, blue vest over a black shirt, black pants, brown boots and a red ascot.
Strategy[]
The Double is essentially invincible and cannot be hit without harming Carnby. He does not move from his position, but imitates every one of his moves, like aiming and punching. He will react when hit by a melee attack or a bullet, but only Carnby will lose health. He always holds a colt with him, and will always point it towards the detective when aiming, even if the player is not aiming directly at the Double.
The only way to defeat the Double is to drop the colt and move towards him. They will touch hands and fuse together. Another strategy is to ignore the Colt in the train tracks completely and interact with him, skipping the need to drop the weapon and pick it up later.
Trivia[]
- The Double is named when being referenced by Carnby as "his double", which is a word used to describe a Doppelgänger, an unrelated look-alike in fiction and mythology that is usually seen as a harbinger of bad luck. Other traditions and stories equate a doppelgänger with an evil twin.[1]
- The Double mirrors Carnby, and so he reverses every move. While the Double holds his Colt in his left hand, Edward Carnby holds it in his right hand. His idle and combat animations are also mirrored.
- The Double's 3D model is missing his left eyebrow. The same thing happens to Carnby's cowboy model.
